Introduction
S. Thangapazham College of Nursing celebrated Breastfeeding Week 2026 from 1st to 8th August 2026 at Tenkasi Headquarters Government Hospital and Government Hospital, Kadayanallur. The programme aimed to create awareness among antenatal and postnatal mothers and the public regarding the importance of breastfeeding and proper infant-feeding practices.
Activities Conducted
The nursing students conducted awareness programmes on:
- Importance and benefits of breastfeeding and breast milk
- Exclusive breastfeeding and early initiation of breastfeeding
- Correct breastfeeding positioning and attachment techniques
- Breast milk expression and safe storage
- Nutritional and immunological benefits of breast milk
- Breastfeeding support for mothers and prevention of common misconceptions
Awareness was created through role play, mime, skit, poster presentation, and health-education sessions. Practical demonstrations were also given on breastfeeding techniques and breast milk expression and storage.

Intercollegiate Competition
Our students actively participated in an intercollegiate poster presentation competition conducted in Tenkasi District.
Ms. Aleena and Ms. Sujitha secured Third Place in the Poster Presentation Competition. They received certificates for their achievement, and certificates were also distributed to the participating students.
Participation
A total of 50 nursing students participated in the programme. Approximately 70 antenatal and postnatal mothers and community members attended the awareness activities.
Outcome
The programme successfully improved awareness regarding the importance of breastfeeding, breastfeeding techniques, breast milk expression and storage, and the health benefits of breast milk. It also provided nursing students with valuable experience in health education, communication, teamwork, and community nursing practice.
Conclusion
The Breastfeeding Week Celebration was successfully conducted with active participation from students, mothers, healthcare professionals, and the public. The programme effectively promoted awareness of breastfeeding and contributed to improving maternal and infant health practices in theHospital.
